Have you always dreamed of having an amazing dog? The dog you adopt might not fit your expectations exactly. No matter which dog you end up with, you now have to learn how to care for your pup.
Hugs are great, but steer clear of kisses. Dog kisses are cute, in theory, but understand a dog’s mouth is typically very dirty. Dogs root around in garbage pails, drink enthusiastically from the toilet bowl and love to lick and smell certain body parts of other dogs. Many people believe that dogs’ mouths do not have as much germs as humans’ mouths. It simply is not the case.
Take your dog to the vet at least one time a year for checkups. Your dog is not able to talk, so it is not easy to know when he’s got arthritis or an aching tooth. Annual checkups can catch issues before they develop into something serious.
Since dogs cannot talk, you need to learn your dog’s cues. If they seem hesitant upon meeting up with other dogs or people, don’t force interaction. This could end up in negative biting or fighting behavior. Follow your dog’s body language.
Try not to buy low quality food for your dog. The cheaper brands actually contain a lot of preservatives, additives and other ingredients that can compromise your dog’s health. Find a list of recommended dog foods from the vet or an advocate for animals. Your dog is going to be healthier if he eats better.
Do not force your dog to eat things. If your dog doesn’t like a particular treat, don’t make him eat it. When you first get a dog, you should take some time to get to know what it likes and what it dislikes.
Regularly brushing your dog’s fur won’t just stop your pet from shedding on your furniture. Regular brushing encourages a healthy, shining coat. Brushing helps to spread the oil on the skin which results in soft, shiny, and healthy skin.
When you get a new dog, schedule a visit with a vet. Directly after getting your dog, be sure to make a check up appointment with a trusted vet. This allows the vet to look him over and schedule the necessary vaccines. Also see about getting your dog fixed because there are tons of animals in shelters and adding to that problem isn’t good.
Your dog must learn to walk on a leash correctly. Your dog should remain at your side and know the command “heel.” This will not only make your walks more enjoyable, but it will also help keep your dog safe. Even if your dog is sometimes walked on a loose leash, it should still know the command anyway.
You may need to trim hair that grows near the dog’s paws to help keep it from matting. Prior to trimming it, straighten the fur using a comb. If you have a hard time with this, enlist the services of a groomer.
If your dog seems unhappy and is alone a lot, consider getting a second dog. Because dogs typically run in packs, they typically love being around other canines. You need to match like-tempered dogs together.
This advice will prove helpful and ignoring it would be a mistake. Use it in all that you do and watch the difference in the behavior of your dog. Make that dog a happy one that loves you unconditionally.
